I will be headed up to Seattle for the Renegade Craft Fair this weekend.  This is my first Renegade event and Seattle’s first as well so this should be exciting!  It looks to be great weather, which I am not sure if will hurt or help the fair but we will see.  Luckily one of my dearest friends lived in Ballard so I have a cheap place to say.  I do love Seattle and I look forward to seeing how my felted products do in the Pacific Nortwest!  Wish me luck!

Hot

two sheep in front of fan

California is being hit with a hot weather system right now.  This is our 5th day of what is supposed to be a weeks stretch of temperatures over 100 degrees. It has reached 103 on a number of days here and that is hot!

I try to keep the sheep cool with drum fans and misters. They appreciate it and often crowd around the moving air. They stay pretty still from around 2:00-4:00 to conserve energy and regulate their internal temps.

The ducks get a hose sprinkling several times a day which they absolutely love! I have a cute video of their reaction to the cool down in next weeks blog.

Our dog Rosie loves to sun bathe!  But this week she’s only been able to stand the heat until about 8:00 in the morning!  It’s too hot!  We are looking forward to a break that’s supposed to be on it’s way Friday.  I sure hope so.

Summer, like Spring, came early this year

sheep pasture

April brought 90+ degree weather here which usually doesn’t arrive until June.  That heat and the lack of spring showers dried out the pastures early this year.  The sheep were very dissapointed as was I to see the green grass go.  Even worse this dry hot weather has increased the fire season in California which is always nerve-wracking.

You can see the vast difference between one pasture to the next.

Usually after the pastures are grazed we get more rain to help the grass grow a second, third, and fourth round so the sheep can continue to dine again and again.  This year the hay will have to be fed out early.
