I just love happy ducks!

I recently bought the ducks a new little tub to bathe in.  They have wading pools but I thought they might like to feel deeper water.  Do they ever!  They form a queue to jump in and splash around.  It’s so cute to watch them waddle up the ramp to wait their turn to dive in.

It is so fun to watch them.  They are just so joyous around water and it’s hard not to catch some of that overpowering feeling.

Now I can see they’d really like a pond or a big stock tank so all of them can fit in at once.  Oh man they would be happy then!  I may have to save up but I just can’t wait to get them what they want.

When it rains, it pours

California had been waiting for rain and worrying about dry conditions.  This weekend we got a storm that took an edge off that worry.  On Saturday my house got 6″ of rain in a 24 hour period.  That’s A LOT!

I cleared all the drainage ditches in the morning and by the afternoon so much debris had washed down from the hills the ditches had overflowed and I had flooding.  It was a long day trying to get so much water to flow the ways that I wanted.

The sheep decided to stay cozy in the barn over the weekend while 8″ of much needed rain fell on the roof.  The ducks however had a ball!  Running/waddling as fast as their web feet would take them, they’d race towards the pasture and the little streams that popped up to dig their bills deep in the water and mud.  Whenever I get tired of the rain I can always watch the ducks thoroughly enjoying their playground and I feel happy about it once again.

Sleepy Ducks

I find some of my most peaceful moments are spent around my animals when they are sleepy or napping.  I have experienced this many times with the sheep.  It’s a feeling of deep calm and almost a meditative state.

Recently I found it works with ducks as well. They were all cozied up in front of the house, dozing in the afternoon.  As they napped I took a few moments out of my hurried day to watch them.  An ease settled in me that I often get from watching moving water at the river.

Just one more gift the farm gives to me.  These animals bring hard-work, love and joy into my life.  Now I am reminded that if I take time to pay attention to it, they can bring me peace as well.

Joyful Ducks

Happy Ducks!

 

It brings me such pleasure to see happy animals.  My ducks are some of the most joyful creatures I have ever known.  Every morning they race out of the coop and into the pastures to find their breakfast.  They search out tender grasses, slugs and snails to feed themselves.  All day long they are on the move waddling from one side of the property to another, quacking all the way..  They stick their bills in the soft ground and dig for treats. They are so entertaining because they are clearly enthusiastic about everything they do.  They shift my perspective whenever I can remember to pause and enjoy their activities, all of which they do with great gusto!
